Crossover piping is typically employed in a steam turbine-generator frame to facilitate the passage of a flow of steam from a relatively high pressure portion of the steam turbine for example a low pressure turbine element of the steam turbine.

The steam from the intermediate pressure cylinder passes to the low pressure cylinders through large diameter IP/LP crossover pipes, which have to accommodate the thermal expansion between cylinders by a combination of various designs of bellows which allow either bending or axial movement

Types of Crossover Pipes:

  • Pressure balanced
  • A hooded design
  • Tied unit
  • Combination of angular and lateral expansion joints

ADVANTAGES:

  • Enables the thermal and mechanical movements to take place without imposing unacceptable loads on the turbine casing.
  • A pressure-balanced arrangement is invariably used to eliminate any pressure forces from the bellows in the expansion joint.
  • Good expansion joint design results in minimal loadings to the turbine casings as to improve the efficiency and reliability of the turbines that are one of the most critical parts of a power plant.
